Current English 9 Units

Grammar Unit (on-going)

We will be working on clauses and phrases for the next few weeks.

Informational Essay

We will begin this essay mid-February.  Instruction, examples, and class time will be provided, but you will need to make good use of your time.  All 5 stages of the writing process should be completed.  The due date has yet to be determined.  This will count as a quiz grade.

Literature

We will be finishing The Odyssey the week of 2/9.  Students will be re-writing the story as a children's book complete with illustrations.  This will be completed during class in a small group setting.  Students should avoid being absent if at all possible.  Once this project is complete, we will move on to Romeo and Juliet.

Vocabulary Unit (packets to be distributed every two weeks)

Look under handouts if you have misplaced your packet.  Make sure you follow the directions and define all fifteen words as well as select another activity.

Independent Reading and Writing Unit (on-going; due the first class of every week)

We have gone over this unit in detail on many occasions.  Students are able to make their own reading selections each week, but they must spend a minimum of fifteen minutes reading.  They will then write about their selection in their journals.  Each entry will be two paragraphs.  In the first paragraph, they will write a summary of the reading without using any quotes; if they are making the selections, then they should have no trouble understanding the material and should not need to use quotes.  The second paragraph should include their observations, feelings, etc. It is here that students are able to tell the reader why they selected the reading.  Students must cite their readings in MLA fashion.  If you have misplaced your reference guide, please see the handout section of the website.  In addition, there are helpful tools on the LHS website under Media Center.
